Leah Suntok
I am a multimedia artist but predominantly work in painting and photography. I create work with two objectives in mind. One is to surround my audience with an atmospheric sense of colour. I play between the boundaries of definitive surface and limitless abyss. As well I aim to create queer representation by highlighting lesbian feminist theory. My audience may experience a wide variety of sensations while viewing my work. This spectrum could include repulsion, absorption, confusion, anger, or sometimes humour. Currently, my work is more theoretically based and builds on the technical skill practiced in my earlier, previously, strictly abstract work. While the past work fits into genres like colourfield painting and modern art, more current works also begin to fit into feminist art, found object art, and lesbian art. I am driven to create work most by a desire to see more queer spaces in public and culture, and to create artwork for the community to relate to, heal, and laugh with.
